The town of Lovech is located on the borderline between the Danube Plain and the northern foothills of the Balkan and it covers the river terraces of the Osam river. The town is surrounded by a 250 m high plateau, with almost vertical slope toward the East industrial zone. The plateau hill and the slopes are occupied by a forest park Stratesh, the South -west part of which is known under the name of "Varosha". Along its steep slopes the architectural and historical Reserve of the same name is situated, nestled between the hills of Hisarya and Bash Bunar. This is the most beautiful and picturesque part of the town.
Lovech is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. Its territory and surroundings have been inhabited ever since the remote past, a prerequisite for which is the favourable geographic situation between the mountain and the plain. Remains of the Old Stone Age, the New Stone Age, the Bronze and the Iron epoch have been found in the caves Tabashka and Vasil Levski in the town of Lovech. There is a great number of evidences for the life of the first citizens of Lovech – The Thracians, during ІV–ІІІ century BC.
The ancient town has been built up on the ruins of the Thracian town Melta, which has probably been the capital of the Thracian tribe meldi and has played the role of an exchange road station between the Thracian tribes, that inhabited the today Romania, the Maritza valley and the Rhodopes. Later when the Romans colonize the Balkan peninsula, they establish a Roman station and name it Prezidium. It has a huge strategic importance along of the biggest Roman roads - “Via Trayana”, which connects the White sea with the Danube river. Even nowadays the citizens of Lovech and the visitors of the town can have a walk along the old Roman route “Varosh”, along which Roman soldiers used to pass.
COVERED BRIDGE
The pride of Lovech. Built up in 1874 by master Kolyu Ficheto - length 84 m, 64 small shops. On 23 of August 1925 it has been burned by a fire. It is erected again in 1927-1931 as a ferro-concrete covered bridge, reconstructed and restored several times. Today its length is 106 m.
HISARYA FORTRESS
Built up in the second half of ІХ century. A citadel of the Middle Ages town till its falling under the ottoman yoke. Here in 1187 a peaceful contract with Byzantium has been contracted and the beginning of the Second Bulgarian kingdom with a capital Tarnovo has been established
КAKRINSKO HANCHE /INN/
Vasil Levski's lobby place. It is located in the village of Kakrina, 20 km far from Lovech, along the road to the town of Sevlievo. It has become a museum on 10 of May 1931.
DEVETASHKA CAVE
It is located 18 km to the north-east of Lovech, on the right river coast of Osam river. It is one of the biggest caves in Europe. The archeological excavations prove that it has been inhabited in the late Paleolithic period. The cultural layers testify that it has been inhabited during the later epochs - Neolith, Eneolith, Bronze and Iron epoch, The Middle Ages. The findings give evidence for the high material and intellectual culture of the inhabitants of the cave. Devetashka cave is a monument of culture and a natural place under protection of national and international significance.
“ST. VIRGIN MARY”
Restored in 1834. The original altar with an open-work fret-work and the icons in it are of interest - masterpieces of the Bulgarian Revival art. From 1971 the church is pronounced for a monument of culture of national importance.
“ST. HOLLY TRINITY” CHURCH
Built up in 1868 in “Harmaneto” residential area. After The Liberation it is promulgated for a cathedral temple - statute, that it possesses up to the present days.
